BIO 101 lesson
Name the main branches of biology and explain why the subject is useful in health, food, and the environment.
BIO CH.1-7.pdf, book pp. 2–6
Two big branches sit at the base of biology. Botany is the study of plants. Zoology is the study of animals. Most other fields grow from these two, plus the study of tiny organisms and of molecules inside cells.
Anatomy asks how a body is built. Physiology asks how it works. Cell biology looks at cells; biochemistry looks at the chemistry of life; genetics looks at how traits are passed on. Ecology studies living things with their surroundings. Microbiology studies bacteria, protists, and fungi.
Biology is useful because it explains body change, disease, food production, and how to protect habitats. Careers include medicine, agriculture, pharmacy, forensics, environmental science, and genetic engineering. Ethics matters too: gene editing is powerful and must be used with care.

Start with botany and zoology, then add the specialist fields. Biology matters because it explains bodies, disease, food, and the living environment, and it opens many careers.
