Data, information and units

A datum is one observation; data are observations or recorded facts. Information is the meaning obtained after organising and interpreting data in context. Identify the observational unit before classifying a variable. A numeric label such as an account number identifies an entity: arithmetic on its digits has no substantive statistical meaning. A quantitative variable records an amount; a qualitative or categorical variable records membership of a category.
