Primary and secondary sources

Primary data are collected by the investigator for the current purpose. Secondary data are obtained from existing records produced by someone else or for another purpose. The same dataset may be primary to its collector and secondary to a later analyst. A census seeks information from every population unit; a sample survey studies a subset. Check coverage, date, definitions, missing values and relevance before analysis.
