Evaluate a published statistic

A useful table states its title, coverage, period, units, categories and source. Compare like with like: a count, percentage and rate answer different questions. A change in a definition or population denominator can make apparent trends misleading. Producers should document methods, revisions and limitations; users should preserve context and distinguish estimates from complete counts. Statistical information supports planning, monitoring and evaluation, but does not make value judgements on its own.
