An independence test concerns two categorical variables. Under H0, row and column classifications are independent. Expected cell count=(row total×column total)/grand total. Degrees of freedom=(r-1)(c-1). The statistic is the same sum over cells, and rejection is in the right tail. A significant result shows evidence of association, not causation or its strength. Never treat continuous measurements as category counts without a justified classification.
