A multistage design samples larger units, then smaller units inside them, such as states, local government areas, schools and students. Record the selection method at each stage. Inclusion probabilities are determined by the sequence of conditional selections, and analysis should respect clustering and weights. Multistage sampling differs from a single one-stage cluster sample because not necessarily every final unit in a selected large unit is observed.
