Set the question before the test

A statistical hypothesis concerns population parameters or a probability model. Use H0 with a reference equality and H1 as a directional or nondirectional alternative. Choose the significance level α and test procedure in advance. The test statistic measures how far the sample departs from H0 relative to expected sampling variation. A critical region is the set of sufficiently extreme values leading to rejection.
