A parameter is a fixed unknown population quantity in the frequentist framework used here. An estimator is a rule based on a random sample; its realised numerical value is an estimate. The sample mean estimates μ and the sample proportion estimates p. Point estimation gives one number; interval estimation gives a range produced by a procedure with a specified coverage rate. An estimate should be accompanied by information about uncertainty.
